TRAINSPOTTING : film form in the overdose/withdrawal scene

 ok so voiceover guides audience n he tells people the desperation of the hit

change between the wall n the crouching in flat quickens pace displays urgency 

irony in the two talking cos they’re pretending their in a restaurant ‘oh do u want starters’ when the reality of far from 

he takes the hit n there’s that weird shot of the blood entering n releasing (idk what that this maybe u could do that) 

he takes the hit n there’s a recall to past scenes as he falls to the floor - this is familiar no? 

except the floor starts dragging him in, concern breaks through ( it hunk the music starts here irony of being a perfect day) 


he sinks in deeper deeper (never ending going to rock bottom but never hitting) 
shot is partially hidden, and the shot us looking down in renton- feels like a grave and the partially hidden looks like a coffin 
red is symbolic of blood obviously


no it opens more when he reaches the hospital - he’s more likely to survive n the figurative curtains arent gonna close on him 
in terms of family n friendship, it’s weird cos would u considering mother superior as a friend? u would want renton to be clean n he actively supports his addiction obviously n jokes about getting the money for it yet he tries to save his life n look out for him. he even puts money in his front pocket so he doesn’t even get anything out of it is it concern for his ‘friend’ or is it bc he wants him to survive to get more money

 oh i get it the song plays n u can hear the ambulance siren n u think oh so he called 999 n the two blend together making this weird overstimulated atmosphere n as he drags him u can see the ambulance but it just.. keeps going. n ur like oh not for him then so even though MS is tryna look out for him he’s also looking out for himself by not getting an ambulance to the flat n shoving him into a taxi

renton is reduced to a child- childhood bedroom with the coloured trains, and his parents are tucking him in like a kid, the aftermath of heroin has got him regressing back to a child-like state and he must work his way back to adulthood in order to survive withdrawal maybe (if he survives)
two locks- parents’ view of trust in renton deteriorating as he needs to be ‘trapped in’ with more than one lock. is this ‘normal’ society’s view on addicts/recovering addicts
voiceover monologue once again guides the audience to what is about to happen- we are to expect a withdrawal sequence, a state of limbo, the transition period between sickness and tiredness, does sickness present being addicted and tiredness present being a ‘normal’ person of society who does the boring tiring monotonous choosing from the beginning?
hallucinations begin and we see renton’s deterioration- the room is moving away from him , going backwards (again regressing?) and he is losing sense of reality 
the dance? music is so misplaced it just feels wrong with his tossing and turning


cursing at his parents- shows the realism of the withdrawal the anger and desperation is overwhelming that he doesn’t care what he says n who he says it to or if they listen past the door yet the parents are still willing to try (which could be argued as unrealistic but how unconditional is parental love?)
all the hallucinations are manifest ions of rentons guilt ; ultimately this is what he’s being ‘running’ from and though he pretends he at least started heroin to challenge the societal sense perhaps the piling of misery is what keeps him coming back to it (like when he immmediately goes for a hit after the baby dies):

the girl and (probably the moustache too) the baby- rentons worst moments are coming back to haunt him but we hear them before we see them. it’s grim as we wonder why we hear a baby before we see the horrible horrible image of it crawling the ceiling like a demonic ... thing. and proximically placing it above renton and more whatever foreground ? just gives it the power in the shot the baby is the biggest criticism of heroin addiction as it is the neglect caused by the addiction that lead to it 
renton turns away and sees the game show- the hiv foreshadowing from when he took the hit
renton is visibly in anguish for the sounds and the overstimulation hearing the screams of the mother and the child and the ‘say no’ 
the baby reappears cementing the idea that this was the pivotal point n the major part that led to renton s cleanness 
together they portray his deep self loathing and even if like the hallucinations of his friend group arent necessarily guilt manifestations they are a reminder of his own dependency on heroin n how much they are alike in their desperation for a hit n how they ruin each other for a hit (eg how he feels guilty for letting the guy take the fall and go to jail for him bc they could have gone together but he goes solo)
then they all crash and burn at once n he has all this guilt he has to face but he tries so hard to look away 
as an audience we are faced with every bit of his moral ugliness and we have the same choice as the parents ‘is he guilty or not’ n we see the parents say ‘he’s our son’ parental unconditional love. perhaps not so realistic but the idea of being faced with that .. 

none of this makes any sense btw n that’s bc i give up
